Straw is an agricultural by-product in plentiful, cheap supply, with great insulation properties. This material sets the tone for the whole development.
Flying factories (empty workshops near or next to site) are established for the ‘just-in-time’ assembly of the panels, using local labour and resources. This not only reduces storage and transport costs, but supports the local economy.
The Pre-fabricated straw bale panels are then coated in lime render and colour washed or timber clad to either blend with local materials or create a vibrant counterpoint.
Our concept was to to take a perceived, deep green and hairy technology and combine it with modern methods of construction (MMC). By combining the best from both worlds we have developed a sustainable, carbon neutral cladding system.
